Classic but Verdant at The Loft at 132
There are many things I love about being a cake designer.
I’m especially grateful for extraordinary range of opportunities I have to express myself and practice creativity. We are all inherently creative but it does seem to me like something you need to practice and get better and better at tapping into or strengthen, like a muscle. Or maybe its just learning how to get out of your own way.
Styled shoots are such a great way to engage in this practice: Getting to meet, learn from, and collaborate with other creatives who are also learning to flex those muscles. Finding that element in a vision or mood board that captures your imagination and learning to follow where it leads…Sometimes it's a color, or a texture, a particular flower, sometimes it’s just a feeling or mood barely captured in words. It’s liberating and scary for the cake designer because we are often the least involved in the overall event design but must, somehow encapsulate its mood and feeling in one of the most powerful and iconic symbols of the union.
I recently got to work with an incredibly talented team on a modern shoot at The Loft at 132 in Sun Prairie. When presented with the board designed by Cherry Blossom Events, I was struck by the clean graphics in black and white but also the way they were balanced with unexpected, verdant romance of the deep greens and pinks.
To capture the clean, modern element, I went for an unexpected silhouette and black fondant ribbon at the base of each tier. I knew I wanted to mirror the beautiful floral but not over-complicate the design so I went for a single sugar flower stem. Wouldn't happen in nature but looks pretty on the cake! In the end, I was really happy with the way the cake ended up in conversation with the other design elements.
Beautiful space, super-talented team, gorgeous shoot!
